How to Reset Your Microsoft Password

NOTE: The IT Help Desk will NOT assist you in resetting your password.


Overview

If you have forgotten your Microsoft password or need to change it for security reasons, you can reset it using Microsoft's self-service password reset portal.


Before You Begin


You will need:

  • Your Microsoft 365 email address

  • Access to a registered authentication method (mobile phone, alternate email, or Microsoft Authenticator app)


Option 1: Reset a Forgotten Password

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to:
    https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com

  2. Select I forgot my password.

  3. Click Next.

  4. Enter your Microsoft 365 email address.

  5. Complete the security verification (CAPTCHA).

  6. Click Next.

  7. Choose one of your available verification methods:

    • Microsoft Authenticator App

    • Text Message

    • Phone Call

    • Alternate Email Address

  8. Follow the prompts to verify your identity.

  9. Enter a new password that meets your organization's password requirements.

  10. Click Finish.

  11. Sign in to Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, and other Microsoft applications using your new password.


Option 2: Change Your Password While Signed In

If you know your current password and simply want to change it:

  1. Go to: https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info

  2. Sign in with your Microsoft 365 account.

  3. Select Password.

  4. Enter your current password.

  5. Enter and confirm your new password.

  6. Select Submit.


Troubleshooting

I don't receive the verification code

  • Verify that your phone number or alternate email address is correct.

  • Check your spam or junk folder.

  • Ensure you have cellular service if using SMS verification.

I no longer have access to my verification methods

Contact your IT department or Help Desk for assistance resetting your authentication methods.

My account is locked

If your account has been locked due to too many failed sign-in attempts, wait several minutes and try again, or contact your IT department.
